HERE'S THE DEAL, GUYS.

I'm going to post several thread openers as replies to this post. They'll have headers like an opener discussed in RP 101 Part 2, except without the "Who" because they're all open to everyone. Once I've posted the thread opener, you guys will RP in "sub-threads"--basically, threads within a thread. Make sure to click "reply to this" not "post a new comment." (DON'T GET STRESSED OUT--IT'S JUST THE TERMINOLOGY THAT'S COMPLICATED. THE ACTUAL PLAYING ISN'T.)

It'll work something like [community profile] bakerstreet RPing, so you can look there for examples. Here's one example that gives you a good idea how it works... Generally, there will be back and forth between two characters in each sub-thread, and if another character wants to jump in, they'll do so in a separate sub-thread so it doesn't get confusing.

Stuff that happens here can either be used as backstory building for the relationship of your characters or COMPLETELY practice that won't affect the main RP when it gets started--that's up to you and your RP partners.

REMEMBER, THE GOAL IS TO HAVE FUN, so don't stress yourself out! Nothing has to be perfect. No one's going to judge you.

If you have any questions, shoot me an ask or, if you want, my AIM SN is PouffAboutTown, and I'm always happy to talk to any of you.

SCENE POSTS

A post is what you'd think it is; it's that thing you do on the post an entry page. This thing I'm doing right now is a post.

In RPing, a scene post is a way of setting up a scene between two more more characters. Each post should have: a title, a header, and an opener. These posts should go on [community profile] mhrp which you can do by clicking on the dropdown menu by "Post to:" and clicking mhrp.

The title will include the name of the scene--like the title of a story, this gives you a taste of what the scene is about. The title will also designate a scene as "open" or "closed." ANYONE can reply to an open post and start RPing. A closed post only includes the characters listed in the header. Open posts are usually a good way of getting your character a chance to interact with other characters, while closed posts are usually planned between two or more players in advanced and are a good way of developing the relationship between those particular characters.

The header will include basic information to let people know what to expect from the scene. I like to use a Who, Where, When, and sometimes What header. Who lets people know who is involved in the scene. For open posts, just add names as characters show up. For closed posts, just include the characters who will be involved. Where tells the setting. When tells when, approximately, the scene takes place. What is not necessary, but you can include it to give a little more information on what the scene will be about.

The opener is a narrative that starts the scene. For open posts, these should be open-ended so that other characters can easily join in, regardless of who shows up. For closed posts, the opener should set the tone for the scene.

OKAY, so you've got your scene post up. Now what?

This is the part where people tag your post. A tag is a reply that furthers the scene. A group of tags together is called a thread.

Here's a tag:

Here's the thread this tag is part of:

Dropping a thread is when one of the players stops tagging a thread before it's reached a logical conclusion. I would suggest contacting the player you're RPing with to talk about dropping the thread instead of just stopping, because some players will be upset or feel like they're doing something wrong if someone randomly drops a thread with them.

A FEW NOTES ABOUT TAGGING

- When writing a tag, try to consider how someone might reply to it. If your tag is entirely a character's internal thoughts with no action or dialogue, it can be difficult for someone to tag you back.

- People have different tagging styles. Some people tag quickly, some tag slowly. Some write short tags, some write long tags. Personally, I tend toward short, semi-quick tags. NONE OF THESE TAGGING STYLES ARE BETTER THAN THE OTHERS. Do not stress yourself out trying to write longer tags just because your RP partner writes long tags. If you can continue the scene and include plenty of meaning, but few words, that's ABSOLUTELY FINE. The only bad kind of tags are lazy tags!

- Some RPers find it less stressful to RP with "action tags" which means putting brackets around actions instead of quotations around dialogue. For example: Hey, Alex [Brian finished his ice cream cone.] Personally, I don't get this style, but if any of you would prefer it, go ahead and use it! I will be sticking to "narrative tags" (using quotation marks for dialogue.)

Okay, hopefully that's cleared up a few things. If you have any questions about posting, tagging, and threads, please comment here!

JOURNALS

For each character you play, you are going to want a separate journal here on Dreamwidth with a specific name that applies to them. For example, [personal profile] thestar is my Brian journal. I'm not going to use it for anything other than RPing Brian. This keeps things simple!

The name you use is usually related to some aspect of your character's personality--probably one of your favorite aspects. I chose this for Brian because I think his identity as ~the star~ is important to understanding him. I RP Alex under the username [personal profile] staticky, for obvious reasons. Some people go for more humorous usernames, some people go for serious usernames. It's up to you! Remember, a name that is clearly associated with that character will help other players remember who is who.

ICONS

Some RPers are more invested in icons than others. I'm definitely into icons, but that doesn't mean all of you have to be! These are just suggestions.

First off, icons are 100x100 pixel images. If you don't have a graphics program on your computer, I would recommend pixlr.com. If you're not good at making graphics, please comment here or send me a message somewhere, and I will make icons for your character! I love making icons, so you will not be putting me out or annoying me, I promise.

To upload your icons, go here. You can upload up to 15 icons with a free account directly from your computer.

You should definitely have at least ONE icon of your character as the default. Not using an icon will throw other players off and make it harder for them to remember who you're playing. Also it just looks nicer.

Beyond your default icon, I would suggest making icons for all of the most common emotions your character will convey. This will help other players visualize your character more clearly during a scene. I usually make sure to have icons that convey happiness, sadness, confusion, fear, anger, and love. This will vary a bit from character to character. For example, Brian will probably have more happy icons than... basically anyone else in Marble Hornets.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, please leave a comment or message me here or on Tumblr. More RP 101 posts will be up shortly so we can get this show on the road soon!

IDEAS!

Okay, while we're waiting for a few more people to get over their self-consciousness and join our party, I figure this is a good idea to throw some ideas around.

FIRST OFF, I'm going to make an RP 101 type post, because I've had a few people talk to me about not being sure how to RP and needing some help, etc. That'll be up probably sometime tonight.

Now, the fun stuff.

I figure we can start things RP-wise by having a party post. Party posts are generally silly RPing that don't need to factor into any of the rest of the RP. It's just a way to let loose and also practice your character voice.

As for a sustained plot, there are a few ways we can go... If we end up with multiple players for certain characters, we may have more than one of these, but for now let's assume we'll just have the one cast.

- We can do a selective memory wipe of all the characters.
Downside: We'd lose some of the interesting development in the series.
Upside: Jay and Tim wouldn't be too afraid of Alex to ever interact with him, and we could develop things our own way while staying true to the characters and setting etc.

- We could start at a certain point in canon and go off in our own direction. For example, we could decide that the last canon point we're using is Entry #73, and we do our own thing from there. We can even incorporate future canon events if we decide to.
Downside: It'd be really hard to get certain characters to interact with each other.
Upside: We get to keep the development in the series up to that canon point.

- We could start at the beginning of the series (or earlier, during the filming of AK's Marble Hornets) and follow the progression of the series. I would post every so often that we're moving on to Entry #Whatever and we'd play off of the events that might happen around that entry.
Downside: We'd be pretty limited in what could happen to the characters, since we know where things are going (to a point).
Upside: It would keep the game structured and everyone wouldn't have to struggle to come up with a new plot idea, since the entries would do that for us.

WHICH ONE SOUNDS BEST? WHAT OTHER IDEAS DO YOU HAVE? As I said before, we could have two of these ideas running at once... We'd just label the posts accordingly so it wouldn't get confusing.

POST HERE WITH A CHARACTER YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH.

If there are multiple people who want the same character, we can talk it out and figure out what to do. This could be a free-form type RP, or we could make different little groups that play certain characters together so there isn't confusing overlap. WE'LL SEE ONCE I SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN.

(P.S. I am actually super organized and have run RPs before, don't let my 1am crazy fool you.)

LIST OF PEOPLE
Alex - snakefloss
Brian - Babel ([personal profile] thestar)
Jessica - beepish ([personal profile] oneonezerotwo)
Masky - reactionchick
Tim - twenty-first-century-cure

REMEMBER, even if a character is listed above, you can still let me know that's who you're interested in. We can find a way for everyone to have fun! You're not taking it away from anyone else if you want to play the same character.
